Student Advisory Council

The Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective is calling for nominations for its 2022-23 Student Advisory Council.  We are looking for students who are currently in 9th to 11th grade. The goal of this Council is to guide the efforts of the Collective through the student voice. The twelve members of the Student Council will help guide strategies and provide feedback on their effectiveness for the beneficiaries of the Collective.  Student participation is so important that two students from the council will be part of the Collective's Steering Committee.

 

YOUR student voice is crucial for the success of this initiative. We expect our committee to be a diverse group of students representative of the Philadelphia region who champion our goal to increase the number of Black, Latinx and women Philadelphia students entering STEM careers by 2030. Therefore, we invite you to apply to the Collective’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) if you want to be part of our success. 

The goal of the SAC is to guide the efforts of the Collective through the student voice. The high school student members of the Council will help guide strategies and provide feedback on their effectiveness for the beneficiaries of the Collective. 

what would i be doing as a member of SAC?

  • You will be a leader by discussing and representing your views and those of your peers at Collective Workgroup Meetings (Home & Community; K-12 Education; Post-Secondary Education; Work Environment) and SAC meetings

  • You will brainstorm strategies and provide feedback on initiatives  created by the Collective

  • You will be part of the decision making alongside community leaders to drive change and benefit the underrepresented populations of Philadelphia. 

  • You will meet twice a month with other student leaders across the community. The  SAC meetings, developed by SAC members, provide opportunities for everyone to work together on mutually defined goals, participate in leadership skill-building activities, and meet industry leaders around Philadelphia

What am I committing to as part of the SAC?

  • Attending bi-weekly SAC meetings (~3 hours/month)

  • Participating in one of the PSEC Workgroup's montly meetings to represent the student voice      (~2 hours/month)

  • Serving in the SAC for at least    12 months

  • Serving as a voice for others providing honest and thoughtful feedback

  • Modeling our Guiding Principles

what can i get out of this opportunity?

  • Network with a group of diverse peers from all around the city that are interested in amplifying STEM opportunities for Philadelphia Students

  • Have a meaningful voice and role in the direction and activities of the Collective

  • Develop leadership skills 

  • Participate in youth-planned and led activities, as well as other special activities

  • Earn community service hours

  • Gain college application assistance and letters of recommendation

how do i apply?

  • Complete all parts and answer all the questions in the application. There are four open-ended questions as part of the application:

  • What is one issue you would like to see improved in your school or community? (250 word limit)

  • Who is a role model in your life and why? (100 word limit)

  • What other out-of-school time activities do you participate in?  (If any)

  • Why do you want to be part of the Student Advisory Council for the Collective? (250 word limit)

  • You will need to upload a pdf of your most recent grades. 

  • You will need one recommendation from a teacher, community member or a counselor. that they will fill by clicking on  the "Recommendation Form" button on the column at right.

  • If you are not yet 18, you will need permission from your parent/guardian to apply. and tp participate in the SAC,  They can do so by filling out the "Permission Form" button on the column at right.

One recommendation per student applicant is required.  It can be from a teacher, counselor, or community leader who can speak on behalf of the student's ability to commit to the requirements mentioned above.

  • December 6, 2021 - Application process for Student Advisory Council begins.

  • EXTENDED to April 1, 2022 - Application and all its part are DUELate application will not be considered 

  • April 15 - Finalists will be notified

  • April 18 to 29 - Interviews

  • May 6 - Decision letters sent

  • May 20 -  Student Advisory Council announced.

  • June TBD - First meeting
